An externally recirculating ball screw consists of a screw, nut, steel balls, elbows, and a fixed block. The balls are located between the screw and nut, moving from the screw's spiral groove into the elbow, then back through the elbow and back into the spiral groove, producing an endless loop of motion. The elbow is attached to the outside of the nut; this type of ball screw is called an externally recirculating ball screw.
